Parking Meters As Bike Racks

Parking Meters As Bike Racks

By Aziz Ali on February 17, 2010

New York’s Department of Transportation is planning to transform 225 parking meters into bike racks. This latest greening effort is due to begin this Spring within pockets of areas in NY including the Upper East and West sides, Brooklyn’s Park Slope, Riverdale in the Bronx, and Ridgewood, Queens.

The parking meters are mutated into bike racks by loping off the head, and attaching a circular piece of metal to the bare pole. A similar program has successfully been introduced in Toronto, where 16,000 of these bike racks have been installed (as seen in the picture above.)

In an article by The New York Post, NYC Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan cited that biking in the city has increased by 26% throughout last year. It was also pointed out that similar initiatives are being taken in Los Angeles, and Chicago.
