The Dangers Of Robot Journalism

The Dangers Of Robot Journalism

By Dan Gould on February 5, 2010

AOL’s new Seed service automatically generates what it thinks are hot stories (based on trending topics around the web), and then sends requests out to its pool of  journalists to cover it.

Recently, a Tumblr blog dedicated to ridiculous Rosa Parks comparisons showed up on Seed’s radar, and the woman who runs the site was bombarded by interview requests from at least 9 correspondents. She was rightfully angry, and declined to do any interviews.

It’s a curious and notable glitch in this automated journalism system where computers made the decisions but real people got caught in the cross fire.
