As interaction designers who transform raw data into visualizations and insights become more valuable, marketplaces are emerging that provide these artists with source material. Data Marketplace and Infochimps are two early entrants into this market, each providing services that connect those who have access to raw data to those who would like to work with it. These services allow users to search for datasets of all varieties, ranging from game records of professional sports to the usage of hashtags and smileys in a year’s worth of Twitter data; providers of information upload this either free for use, or they set a price for download.

FlowingData notes that as transparency and free flow of information/API’s increasingly become the norm, these services will compete not by providing the actual data as a product (as data will be everywhere), rather their value will be in providing human-filtered and machine-readable data.
