(Infographic) What People Are Buying Online Vs. Offline

By Paloma M. Vazquez on March 4, 2010

E-commerce buyer acquisition channel Permuto has used recent US Census Bureau data to depict the amount of purchases across several categories that are made in-store, vs. online – and what they mean in terms of total revenues to each category.

While the bulk of sales are still in-store, the gap is not terribly wide.  Perhaps not surprisingly, e-commerce sales seem to outpace in-store sales across several specific categories, including books and magazines, clothing, and electronics.  The glaring exception where offline sales far outnumber online is drugs & health aids.

It will be interesting to note how this chart changes in a year, or two.
