Using Heartbeat Sensors To Unlock The iPhone

By Naresh Kumar on June 14, 2010

It looks like Apple has even more futuristic plans for the iPhone. A recent patent filed by the company reveals that they are developing special heartbeat sensors for the mobile device. Significantly, the patent states that the technology could have uses such as allowing the owner to unlock the phone with only the unique electrical signal of their heartbeat. The user’s pulse would be measured through the touchscreen of the device, which would detect unique patterns and be able to distinguish users by matching it to a pre-recorded heartbeat held in the phone’s memory. The technology could pave the way for applications requiring user authentication such as providing access to sensitive data contained on a phone or authenticating financial transactions.
