With around 160 million customers each year, Delta Air Lines have moved their ticket sales into the social media world, taking bookings through Facebook directly. Dubbed the ‘Delta Ticket Window,’ the Atlanta-based carrier is the first airline to make the move, available to U.S. citizens in the form of a Facebook Application. Created by Alvenda – a social commerce company who claim to be the first company to bring retail onto Facebook in July 2009 with the StoreCast™ platform; the application is reportedly the first of it’s kind for travel services. Launched on the 12th of August, Bob Kupbens, Delta’s Vice President of eCommerce stated;
Our customers are spending more time online and are looking for new ways to connect with us. We’re now bringing Delta to our customers rather than the other way around – on our own website, on Facebook, on travel web sites, on Internet news sites, and beyond.
From Delta’s Facebook page, users can access the application via the ‘Book A Trip’ tab. With over 500 million Facebook users, Delta’s venture is the first of no-doubt many commercial ventures into the social media realm.
