According to Nielsen Soundscan, Cake’s “Showroom of Compassion” sold 44,000 and now carries the honor of the lowest-selling Number One in chart history.
Cake’s new album, “Showroom Of Compassion” is currently sitting atop the Billboard 200 chart. However, the achievement is slightly tarnished by the fact that the album earned its spot by selling just 44,000 copies, making it the lowest selling album ever in the history of Soundscan. The previous record was held by Taylor Swift last week, displaying the rapidly declining interest in compact discs. Conversely, over in the Digital Songs chart, Britney Spears’ “Hold It Against Me” soared up the charts with 411,000 sales, which according to Billboard is “the largest debut for a woman as a lead artist.” This past week, American album sales experienced an 11% drop compared to the same total last year at 10.3 million units, while digital track sales were up 8% totaling 57.2 million.
