Queen Of The Sun: What Are The Bees Telling Us?

By Kyana Gordon on March 30, 2011

All across the globe, bees are disappearing and no one understands why. While the causes of Colony Collapse Disorder are still a mystery, the tragic consequences are far more apparent. Without honey bees pollinating the plants around us, our ecosystem will change irrevocably, putting particular pressure on global food stocks and world economy.  Queen of the Sun is a documentary that takes an in-depth look at the worldwide bee crisis. Directed by Taggart Siegel, the film takes viewers on a journey through the catastrophic disappearance of bees and the mysterious world of the beehive – diving straight into the recent collapse of the bee population and its culprits, from the overproduction of honey to pesticides that are killing off both bees and the plants that they feed from. The unusual and dramatic story also chronicles the under represented struggles of beekeepers, scientists and philosophers including Michael Pollan, Gunther Hauk and Vandana Shiva. What’s revealed are both the solutions and conflicts associated with aligning culture with nature.

The grassroots environmentally-focused documentary isn’t all doom as a dedicated bee lovers offer strategies for keeping them alive and  buzzing. A national release has been announced so check the listings for a screening nearby.
