Flash Mob Arrested For Dancing At Jefferson Memorial [Video]

By John Ryan on May 31, 2011

A flash mob protest against the dancing ban at the Washington, DC Jefferson Memorial turned violent as parks police arrested participants. In view of several cameras, police body-slam and choke-hold a protester at the foot of a statue of Thomas Jefferson. The “silent dancing flash mob” was organized to protest a federal ruling against dancing at the Memorial, “in order to maintain ‘an atmosphere of calm, tranquillity, and reverence.’” The ruling rejected a civil lawsuit against the Parks Service in response to a 2008 arrest of a woman for dancing to headphones at the Memorial on the eve of Jefferson’s birthday.
