A new sustainable initiative helps to feed the locavore lifestyle.
The US now has its first commercial-scale, rooftop food production facility in Brooklyn, New York. Spearheaded by Gotham Greens, this urban initiative has constructed a 15,000 square foot greenhouse facility on a rooftop in the neighborhood of Greenpoint and harvest has begun this June. Aiming to produce year round, this vertical farm on a rooftop includes hydroponics, allowing for a site specific approach to growing that doesn’t require soil for production and therefore light for the roof to withstand this level of growth. Growing a diverse range of vegetables including bok choy, butter lettuce and arugula, Gotham Greens is estimated to be able to grow up to 80 tons of produce for local restaurants and retailers.
