Remember when your AOL account would greet you with “you’ve got mail!” and old fashioned mailbox icon appeared on your screen? Remember when that was a brand new form of communication?

It’s been 40 years since email was born, even though the word “email” wasn’t coined until ten years after its birth. Today, it’s become one of the most common way to reach someone. To mark the momentous occasion, the AP Stylebook has changed the spelling of e-mail to email, and email server Reachmail has created a 40th Anniversary infographic looking at how far email has come since 1971 (see below).
