A mash-up of fashion and sports creates a suave new line of athletic ware for New York's premiere soccer team.

On a typical night in the Lower East Side you come to expect a few constants: there will be well-dressed throngs out on the town looking for a party, the music blasting from nearby bars will saturate the downtown air, and a small, dimly lit space will try to fit in the maximum amount of people possible. While this scene is nothing new for a summer evening on Orchard Street, this past Wednesday the surprise culprit was the usually unassuming (but always curious) Reed Space. With throngs of suit-clad men and young PR ladies in fashionable black dresses lining the front doors, you could easily forget that instead of an upscale club, Reed Space is actually one of the best places in the city to find what’s up-and-coming in urban and counterculture sports and lifestyle, and occasionally spot some of its most prolific members.

Though somewhat ambiguously promoted, the night’s events were held to honor the recent collaboration between Umbro and The New York Cosmos, and the resulting collection: an homage to the 1977 blackout- one of the most seminal events in contemporary NYC history. Though a tenuous connection at best, the Umbro x NY Cosmos collection was also inspired by Brazilian defender Carlos Alberto Torres’ arrival in our fair metropolis, which coincided with the height of blackout. According to soccer legend, the addition of Torres to the team was the spark which elevated the The Cosmos from humdrum to greatness that year. As part of the collaboration, Torres also speaks about his first impressions of a darkened city in an animated short available for view on the Umbro website. Among the black polaroids, solo cups, and various installations at the LES preview, viewers were also treated to a first glimpse of the wares: a simple (perhaps event elegant) arrangement of black-on-black trainer jackets, polo shirts, tees, and more.

Though we won’t be sad to see our beloved Reed Space shed some of the glamour of the night’s event, we’ll definitely be stopping by soon to get a better look at Umbro x The New York Cosmos. Check below to see some photos of the collection, as well as Reed Space’s in-store installations and opening party.
