The Gates Foundation Teams Up With FC Barcelona To End Polio

By Emma Hutchings on October 26, 2011

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has partnered with Spanish football team FC Barcelona in the hope of ending Polio, a crippling viral disease that mainly affects children and is vaccine-preventable. It has been almost eradicated and the aim of the ‘More Than a Goal‘ campaign is to finish it off. They are raising awareness and calling people to action using social media.

Their Facebook page asks people to grow the movement and ask friends to get involved by posting and tweeting messages. There is an End of Polio petition to add your name to, with each signature allowing a child to be vaccinated through the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. It costs less than $1 to vaccinate a child from polio and you can add your donation by following the link on the page. You can also update your profile picture to a ‘More Than a Goal’ banner featuring one of nine top FC Barcelona finishers, including Lionel Messi and David Villa.
