Macy’s Extends Its Eco-Friendly Efforts To Produce Recyclable Gift Cards

By Alice Chan on December 22, 2011

Macy’s is partnering up with Earthworks System LLC, the global leader in recycled PVC sheets for the plastic card industry and plastic card recycling programs, to create a recyclable gift card program for its customers. Each Macy’s gift card will be imprinted with a Earthworks System Recyclable identifier to indicate it is made of Earthworks System-approved recyclable material. Once a customer has used up the balance in the gift card, the retailer will collect the empty cards to return to Earthworks System where they will be reprocessed in printable sheets and resold to printers to make new cards.

Rodd Gilbert, president of Earthworks System, said of the partnership:

The Earthworks System for plastic card recycling complements Macy’s sustainable business philosophy. Our partnership will provide Macy’s and its customers an environmental solution for the significant number of plastic cards it distributes every year.

The new program, just in time for the holiday season, will be the first of its kind in the retail industry and is part of its bigger strategy to close the loop on all of its commerce components.
