Barcelona Hostel Makes Exterior Walls A ‘Natural’ Urban Campground

By Kristen Nozell on January 6, 2012

Polish architecture firm UGO has designed a concept for a hostel in Barcelona that could potentially become not only an urban landmark, but would also create a new way to explore and observe the city. Dubbed ‘Barcelona Rock,’ the concept was designed for the 2011 Bohemian Hostel for Backpackers international competition.

Inspired by the nearby Montserrat mountain range, the exterior of the building resembles and functions as a rock wall, complete with natural greenery. Experienced climbers can scale the rock tower and even spend the night camping on the side or top of the ‘mountain,’ using special equipment. The design features fifty indoor guest rooms, a swimming pool, spa, gym, shops and climbing walls for beginners.

Even if the concept does not become a reality, Barcelona Rock is an inspirational example of a way to bring natural exploration to an urban landscape.
