The Alfine Di2 road bike comes with Shimano’s advanced electronic shifting system. Shimano originally designed the electronic shifting system for its high-end Dura-Ace bicycles. The system relies on small electrical charges as opposed to wires to allow for fast, smooth, and accurate gear changes.

The LED screen fits discretely on the handle and displays the gear speed along with the battery life. On a single lithium ion battery charge, the bicycle can travel more than 1,000 miles. The Alfine Di2 can also withstand tougher weather conditions compared to a traditional geared bike because the internal hub drive train is sealed and not so much exposed.

According to Cool Hunting, the Alfine Di2 will be available Fall 2012 in specialty bike shops and directly through Shimano dealers.
