Architecture firm SOM has proposed a viewing deck above the station that moves up and down the sides of two skyscrapers.
While Fosters and Partners has been commissioned to redesign Grand Central Station, architecture firm SOM has proposed a ‘floating’ observation deck above the station that would move up and down the sides of two new skyscrapers, creating a unique way to see Manhattan from above.
The proposal follows an invitation from the Municipal Art Society of New York to re-think the spaces in and around the station. Dezeen reports that the donut-shaped observation deck would attach to two office towers and the firm believes it would offer an iconic landmark with a 360° view of the city skyline. The plans also include new pedestrian routes to help ease congestion, and a series of public spaces. Click through to see pictures of the proposed design:
