NYC-based mixed media artist Leah Foster creates installations using cupcakes. She has baked thousands of the tiny, tasty cakes for installations at ConArtist in New York and Guerilla Arts in Texas, using different colored icing and cases to make bright and tempting displays.

One “Muffin Tops” installation featured 10 foot tall towers created using fishing line, with a total of 10,000 cupcakes. Viewers were able to interact with the piece as part of the experience.

Foster writes about the reasoning behind her installations:

This body of work attempts to utilize the cupcake as a means of exploring gendered body image expectations fashioned by the mass media… In exposing the duality of the cupcake, I hope to question the physical expectations of the human form. The viewer experiences, devours, and creates the pieces within the series, and in doing so, actively confronts the beauty stereotypes of current mass media.
