Haptic Lab’s ‘Sailing Ship Kite’ is designed like a double-masted ship, handmade by artisans in Bali.
Haptic Lab is a Brooklyn-based team of craft artisans, designers and tinkerers who combine new technologies with traditional craft techniques. Their ‘Sailing Ship Kite‘ is a handmade kite made in collaboration with Balinese artisans from locally-sourced bamboo and nylon.
The certified Fair Trade product, designed like a double-masted sailing ship, flies when the wind fills it’s white sails. Haptic Lab’s founder, Emily Fischer, told Co.Design:
I spent years researching kite history and traditions. Then I spent three months traveling in Asia last year, meeting kite artisans and learning from them: how to balance a design, what materials to use, how to tie specific knots. When I came home, I assembled my kite-making team.
The kite measures approximately 26 x 28″ and comes with Haptic Lab’s signature Baltic birch kite handle, wrapped with braided dacron flying line and is made in NYC. It is available to purchase for $40 from Haptic Lab’s site. Click through to see images of the Sailing Ship Kite:
