Through Listerine's Smile Detector app, those who can't see smiles can listen or feel them instead

Listerine’s latest campaign enlisted an app that can detect smiles using the smartphone camera. Although smile-detection isn’t exactly a breakthrough, this one uses machine vision to let the blind “feel” when someone in their field of vision flashes their pearly whites.

The concept behind the Smile Detector app is introduced through a very poignant short film. The video which was directed by twice Academy-nominated Lucy Walker explores the impact of being able to identify and sense smiles. Walker has also worked on Blindsight about six blind Tibetan children, and is also blind in one eye.
