Unlike the modern consumerist view that when something is broken you have to throw it away and replace it, traditional Japanese philosophy finds beauty in the cracks and imperfections as they are a representation of the journey the object has made. ‘Kintsukuroi” translating literally to “repairing with gold” is an artistic embodiment of this philosophy, as it involves repairing cracked or broken pottery with gold or silver lacquer, visually emphasizing the flaws.

Artist Rachel Sussman decided to take this concept to the streets of her native Brooklyn neighborhood with her new “sidewalk kintsukroi” series. Sussan “repaired” cracked pavement by filling it with a combination of bronze and 23.5 carat gold dust. The project also comprises of 8.5 x 11” photographs hand-painted with enamel and metallic dust. Currently on view at DES MOINES ART CENTER, the installation is part of the “Alchemy: Transformations in Gold” exhibition.
