The tire manufacturer aims to reduce car and cyclist accidents with a new product called BikeSphere

While highly visible clothing does increase cyclist safety, more tools are needed to ensure that vehicle drivers can see cyclists, especially at night. French tire manufacturer Michelin has designed a device called the BikeSphere that projects a ring of light around the rider, marking a safe distance for cars to keep in mind when overtaking a cyclist.

The BikeSphere uses a light sensor and a proximity detector to analyze a cyclist's surroundings and changes the light ring's intensity depending on the environment. In daylight, the BikeSphere has a regular headlight in order to save battery for nighttime riding. The idea for BikeSphere came out of Michelin's Trendy Drivers campaign, which aims to change the habits of drivers to prevent accidents on the road.
