Mindfulosophy invites visitors into a Lululemon space to zen out

Lululemon is moving further into the wellness space by opening a new space called Mindfulosophy which offers visitors a place to recharge and center themselves. The company sees this step into offering meditative spaces as a natural evolution from their retail model that has included in-store yoga workouts for years.

The first Mindfulosophy space will be located inside a brand-new, 8,000-square-foot Lululemon store opening across from Rockefeller Center in New York City. The second location that will house a meditative space will be located in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

The space will include Zen-pods which are basically very comfortable seats where visitors can sit, put on a pair of headphones and listen to one of 12 different self-guided meditations. The meditations are guided by Danielle Nigel, Lululemon’s director of mindful performance and Tom Waller, the head of the company’s Whitespace Innovation Lab.

Mindfulosophy is another example of the mindfulness mega-trend that shows no signs of running out of breath. A new study of more than 85,000 adults found that yoga practice among U.S. workers nearly doubled from 2002 to 2012, from 6 percent 11 percent. Meditation rates are also increasing, from 8 percent to 9.9 percent.

There is big money in meditation and mindfulness which is now ranked as a $1 billion dollar industry. There are nearly 1000 mindfulness apps available that can be paired with countless wearable gadgets designed to help Zen out. The public’s embrace of meditation is said to have been driven by vocal proponents that claim regular meditation can improve the immune system, cure depression, boost memory, regular emotions and even change the structure of the brain.
