Nordstrom Launches A Store Without Merchandise
Delivery & Logistics

This new concept store doesn't have clothes on display, instead relying on a team of expert personal shoppers and same-day delivery

Nordstrom is rethinking what it means to be a physical store. In its latest experiment, there are no racks of fancy clothes. The average 140,000-square-foot store is reduced to just 3,000. Instead of sifting through your options, at Nordstrom Local, you shop online. And instead of doing it alone on a mobile phone or a computer, you have an army of personal stylists and even a manicure chair waiting for you.

This concept store will open on October 3 in West Hollywood, Los Angeles. The store is a bold step towards adopting online shopping habits. In a report by McKinsey, e-commerce in women’s luxury fashion is expected to swell from 3% of the total market to 17% next year, a $12 billion opportunity. But despite this shift to at-home shopping, retailers like Nordstrom seek to differentiate themselves through an exemplary customer experience.

Inside the concept store, expert stylists help shoppers skip the overwhelming feeling of having too many choices. Same-day delivery is on offer so you can shop and wait for the stylists to pick up the items at a nearby store. While waiting, a glass of wine or beer might be enjoyed. Manicure services can also be arranged. Nordstrom Local also acts as the pick-up and returns counter of items bought online at Nordstrom.com, Trunk Club and other Nordstrom outlets. Tailoring and alteration services are also available on site.

In a press release, senior VP of customer experience Shea Jensen says the move is Nordstrom bringing its vision to a new world:

“As the retail landscape continues to transform at an unprecedented pace, the one thing we know that remains constant is that customers continue to value great service, speed and convenience… Finding new ways to engage with customers on their terms is more important to us now than ever.”
