A new meter could inform home owners about which appliances in their house waste the most electricity

42 Technology, an engineering company based in the United Kingdom, have smart meter under development designed to inform electricity consumers about which products in their residence uses the most power.

To determine what devices was drawing electricity from a home’s power box, the smart meter was programmed with an algorithm to notice specific characteristics of these appliances and details this information into a report. When a consumer wants to read the report, they can either pull it up from a smartphone application or receive it alongside their electric bill at the end of the month.42 Technology felt this was a more important product to create as traditional power consumption meters only show a consumer’s total use. By identifying what draws the most power in a home, this smart meter could have a house’s residents making more informed decisions about what they need to leave plugged in or not.

A handful of 42 Technology’s team members have these smart meters installed in their homes as a field test prior to finalizing the product.
