The digital train cars feature TVs, game consoles, a gym and play area for children

Despite being one of the most popular forms of transportation in many countries, travelling by train can often feel like one is stepping into a time capsule. Hoping to update train cars for the 21st century, German railway company Deutsche Bahn has developed a concept for so-called ‘digital' train cars that come jam-packed with relaxing and entertaining features to keep riders amused throughout their journey.

The company's “Ideenzug” (“Idea Train”), will feature cars for gaming with spaces for riders to play on TV screens and gaming consoles as well as a variety of seating options including swivel chairs, benches and folding seats for maximized comfort while sitting and playing. Gamers won't have to worry about getting hungry during their journey either, as each car will come packed with machines that dispense food and beverages like soda and beer.

But gamers aren't the only people who will have an enjoyable time while on board. The train will also have a family-friendly car that hosts a “play paradise” for younger children, including toys and plenty of space for crawling around. And for those fitness buffs, or people who just hate to sit still during long train rides, yet another car will have space for a gym. This car comes complete with equipment like bicycles, letting riders get in a quick workout during their commute.

“In the future, we want to offer our local transport customers more—a new and unique travel experience,” said Dr. Jörg Sandvoß, CEO of DB Regio, a subsidiary of Deutsche Bahn. “That's why we developed the Idea Train with completely new design ideas for the vehicle interior. Our goal is that the public transport commuters think about such ideas in the future.”

Deutsche Bahn is currently showing off a prototype of its Idea Train with the hopes of interesting federal purchasers, although its unclear at this point when or if the train might actually see production.
