The Present app helps connect women to empower each other

Making friends when you are out of school and older is not an easy task. A former Microsoft programer named Janete Perez found herself in a new city struggling to create a new social group, which inspired and resulted in the Present app. The Present app is exclusively for women to connect with each other to create supportive, positive social networks.

The Present app’s goal is to create long-term relationships that bridge the real world and the virtual one. To understand how exactly someone goes from being a stranger to creating a new friend Perez connected with Bob Lee, former CTO of Square, and co-founder of Present to come up with the answer. While proximity is part of the solution, Perez wanted to ensure that the app didn’t sacrifice privacy. Present enables users to see how close a circle of women are or an event is to them, but doesn’t give exact distance like dating and other networking apps.

Ideally Present will be used for a variety of social purposes for women, with support being at the center of it all. Perez imagines everything from professional mentoring, excercise groups, eating out, foreign language conversation practice and a myriad of other meet-ups will be enabled through Present.

To get started on Present you sign in through your Facebook profile. The app allows you to see women in circles based on your interests such as what you have been reading. It offers the ability to chat with a the group or connect to someone directly through private message. Membership is currently limited to the Bay Area, with the goal of expanding to other cities soon.

Perez believes that this app has the potential to make a meaningful difference in women’s lives. She sees it as a way to make grassroots change, and for people to be more present, which was the ultimate inspiration for the name.
