German car manufacturer Audi is easing the minds of customers concerned with how electric vehicles might saturate their power grids with the pilot program Audi Smart Energy Network. The program, which is running in some Zurich and Ingolstadt households, connects users’ electric cars, homes and energy sources using storage batteries and solar installations, with software determining where the energy should go. This way, the network will be able to balance electricity consumption among all the devices in a consumer’s home and vehicle, and no energy will go to waste. This is what Audi calls the network’s “balancing power.”

As Audi explained in a press release, the system can be used to “balance out the fluctuations between power generation and consumption, and stabilize the grid frequency by temporarily storing smaller amounts of energy in stationary units at short notice.”

The company also said that it will be looking into more areas where the car can interact with the owner’s environment, “Audi is also looking at services that extend beyond the automobile as a product. One important aspect is the interrelationship between all those areas of life where the car meshes seamlessly with a connected environment,” reads the press release.
