In Brief

The airport teamed up with Zappos and Mamava to provide comfortable facilities for breastfeeding travelers

Research on breastfeeding continues to find numerous benefits for children and mothers alike, and more efforts are being made to break the taboo around nursing in public. However, challenges remain, particularly when traveling, which is where Mamava and its lactation suites want to help. In its latest collaboration with online retailer Zappos, the business dedicated to transforming the practice of breastfeeding now offers its services at the Atlanta International Airport.

Based in Vermont, Mamava provides high-tech lactation suites around the United States in hundreds of locations like stadiums, convention centers, airports and schools, from California’s Oakland International Airport to Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Center and New York City’s New School.

The suites are sizable mobile pods equipped with locking doors, USB outlets for charging electronics and breast-pumps, air conditioning, a fold-down table with two benches and plenty of room for luggage. Zappos has provided additional accessories, like lactation pad dispensers, cleansing wipes, trash bins, soundtracks of ocean waves and baby giggles, and even happy quotes to encourage relaxation. The suites are also customizable, offering the option for venues to choose motifs, photos, illustrations and more for the exterior.

Mamava has been careful to state that it is very supportive of public breastfeeding and that its private pods are not strike against doing so. The company simply wants to encourage the practice by providing a comfortable and relaxing place for people to nurse, facilitating what is not always an easy task regardless of location but especially for travelers.

Thanks to the partnership between Mamava and Zappos, visitors to ATL will have six lactation pods at their disposal, one in each terminal.
