Back in the 1950s and 60s, movie producers turned to laughable gimmicks like 3D and “Smell-O-Vision” to drum up interest for their films. Today, National Geographic and McCann NY are promoting Jane Root and Darren Aronofsky’s new series One Strange Rock with Space Projection Helmets that let sneak previewers see space through the eyes of astronauts. The helmets debuted at the Whitby Hotel Theater and Lincoln Center in New York City on March 14 before going on a tour of schools and planetariums.

Using a combination of “laser projection, custom fish-eye optics and in-built audio,” the Space Projection Helmets set themselves apart from VR headsets currently on the market by offering “an exceptionally wide field of view…so the user can freely move their head inside of the dome to look around the entire field of vision, just as an astronaut would within their helmet in space,” according to a NatGeo statement.

The 10-part series is hosted by Will Smith and features eight astronauts. It was filmed across 45 countries on six continents and from outer space. It will premiere on NatGeo this Monday, March 26 at 10 p.m. EDT.
