Campaign Gives Newborn Girls Funds To Start Their Own Businesses

To celebrate International Women's Day, Metro AG gave baby girls born in Dusseldorf, Germany a $2,500 deposit to encourage entrepreneurship later in life

German retail and wholesale carry group Metro AG celebrated International Women’s Day in a very practical way by giving every girl born in Dusseldorf, Germany that day her own business card and $2,500 deposit. The funds are meant for the baby girls to use when they grow up to support their future entrepreneurship. Instead of spending money on traditional campaigns, the company decided to make a more significant philanthropic move.

The idea came after Metro’s International Own Business Study, which surveyed 10,000 people in ten countries and found that nearly half of women want to start a company but only 12% think they will pursue this dream. They found that the main reason for this is the lack of financial support. This inspired the campaign, developed with Serviceplan Campaign Hamburg, which is called “Own Business Girl.”

As a bonus, the accounts have a guaranteed interest rate of 2% per annum, a higher rate than what most banks offer. The girls can access their account once they turn 18.
