The tech company markets its Google Glass-inspired wearable device toward enhancing workplace training using augmented reality

Despite its potential to be an exciting consumer product, Google Glass went to bust because of lukewarm public interest in the $1,500 device. Japanese electronics company Panasonic is giving the wearable display another chance with its own version: Kronosys. Debuting at SXSW, the product mimics the familiar Google Glass design, but is geared toward training employees rather than everyday use by the average consumer.

In a video presentation, the device shows off its capabilities in a high-end kitchen. Trainee chefs can wear the glasses to follow instructions, while the onboard cameras let managers monitor their employees’ performance. Additionally, cloud connection will help mine data from the headsets, identifying obstacles to kitchen efficiency and creating a better workspace.

Kronosys positions its product as an invaluable tool for the workplace, especially for people involved in high-pressure, highly technical positions. Meanwhile, the product’s inspiration, the Google Glass, has withdrawn the previous edition of the product and relaunched it as a separate item from Google, calling it Glass. Preserving the original design of the Google product, Glass also targets commercial applications, currently equipping vehicle assembly line workers, warehouse employees and doctors with the device.
