Reviving drive-in style food service is one amenity Tesla is considering implementing at a new supercharger station in LA

Tesla‘s reputation as a future-focused company is being challenged by none other than Elon Musk himself. In an early 2018 tweet, Musk hinted at throwback concept for a new supercharger location in California:

The Drive did some digging and found Tesla has already started the permitting process for a new restaurant and supercharger location in Santa Monica. Recently, Tesla has been opening more amenity-rich supercharger sites. Kettleman City, located about 175 miles north of LA, includes a cafe, Tesla merch shop and a business lounge.

Providing a place for people to relax, work or get a bite to eat is a strategy to offset the wait times required for electric vehicles to recharge. Tesla’s superchargers are already some of the fastest available, capable of delivering up to 120 kW, which can add 170 miles of driving in half an hour or a full charge in 75 minutes. That’s still a decent wait. However, charging technology continues to advance and wait times will get shorter.

The German company Ionity is planning a network of 350 kW chargers to be spread around 400 sites in Europe. These super-superchargers would be nearly three times faster than Tesla’s current 120 kW model and make recharging closer to a gasoline fill-up experience. Tesla’s drive-in idea could future proof the charging hubs for shorter charge times by bringing food service to people in their own cars.

Gonna put an old school drive-in, roller skates & rock restaurant at one of the new Tesla Supercharger locations in LA
