As more people are living longer, better quality of life and independence into older age are of increasing interest. One way to help preserve the self-sufficiency of seniors while ensuring that they’re cared for when needed is using remote devices to help monitor their wellbeing as well as provide assistance if desired.

In particular, digital platforms and products can track the daily health conditions of elderly people from afar and ensure loved ones and caregivers of their safety and wellness, whether or not they need immediate assistance. Here are three ways that technology is making remote senior care possible:

Welbi
Developed in collaboration with senior health care professionals and researchers, Welbi is a mobile application that leverages existing wearable devices, like Fitbit or iHealth, to track elderly people’s health conditions 24/7. Welbi adapts to each person by establishing the user’s day-to-day routine and habits and notifies the caregiver of any changes or possible risks. The algorithm-based technology provides caregivers with more visibility and allows them to take a more proactive approach to caregiving. Welbi also generates tailored weekly and monthly progress reports and delivers them in-app and/or via email.

Birdie
Birdie is a digital platform service for family members and care management to remotely oversee and coordinate the health and wellbeing management of an elderly relative using in-home monitoring equipment, including sensors, cameras and bracelets. Birdie allows family members to sign up for Birdie’s services via the app and add other individuals who may be responsible for monitoring the elder’s health and wellbeing in order to coordinate support, transportation, doctor’s appointments and meal deliveries. Through the app, everyone is connected and informed of any occurrences and has access to additional services from third-party service providers.

Howz
Howz aims to make caring for aging relatives a less arduous task by incorporating home monitoring technology in the place of wearables or invasive devices. Instead of requiring the elderly family member to strap on a wearable device, the Howz app connects to existing systems, such as an electricity meter or a home thermostat, and tracks daily usage patterns in order to alert caregivers when something seems off. The app is particularly useful for caregivers of people suffering from early-stage dementia, as the machine learning and analytics can help identify warning signs in the form of behavioral changes before they start to cause major problems or pose safety issues.

The convenience, minimal intrusion and peace of mind that remote care offers seniors is just one way that technology is enhancing the everyday lives of caregivers and the elderly alike. For more information on the topic, see PSFK’s report Enhancing Daily Life For Seniors.
