The retailer is bringing artists into stores for catered services and customized clothing to attract new clientele

American department store Neiman Marcus is introducing clothing and experiences with a handmade bent. In a week-long event, artists will be present at select stores personalizing fashion items and mixing custom beauty products, in addition to other crafts. Tattoo and body piercings services will also be available—a edgy departure from the upscale retailer’s typical fare.

The change of pace for the retailer is a part of a greater initiative Neiman Marcus is calling the “Idea Factory”—a showcase of ideas, products and enhanced shopping experiences. The program is broken into two phases, with the artist collaboration acting as phase one. The second part will occur in September, with plans to include features that immerse shoppers in everything from food and drink to social consciousness.

The goal of these events is to update the store’s image and attract a new clientele that is interested in purchasing high-end fashion but want a personalized experience and a different aesthetic while shopping. Neiman Marcus has designed the Idea Factory activations to take place exclusively in-store to drive shoppers to brick-and-mortar.
