Pinterest is moving to completely automate its ecommerce Shop the Look function, marshaling AI to scale across the billions of images it shows Pinners

Social media site Pinterest is enhancing the shoppability of its platform: Called Shop the Look, the artificial intelligence feature that allows those on Pinterest to purchase products similar to what they’ve found while pinning is on its way to being fully automated.

Beginning with the home decor section, the process towards total AI management entailed extensive scene-product matching and use of Google Product Taxonomy to sort and categorize items. The upgraded feature will allow the Pinterest employees who had previously been charged with curating the Shop the Look section of the site to focus on other projects, leaving the process to AI.

Pinterest is a platform based on visuals and was responsible for 600 million visual searches a month, this time last year. This upgrade of Shop the Look AI is Pinterest’s next step to making the entire platform shoppable, enabling the site to scale across the billions of images it shows Pinners.
