Having earned her Bachelors and Master of Science degree from the American University in Cairo, along with her Ph.D from the University of Cambridge, Rana el Kaliouby went on to become a research scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and helped found the university's Autism and Communication Initiative. Quickly shifting from her focus on human-computer interaction to human-human communication due to her growing fascination with the field, el Kaliouby worked with the team within the MIT Media Lab that pioneered the development of the "emotional hearing aid", a set of emotion-detecting smartglasses that made its way into the New York Times' Top 100 innovations of 2006. As a current contributor to facial expression recognition research and technology development, a subset of the facial recognition field targeting emotional cognizance with respect to facial expressions, Rana el Kaliouby leads the Emotional Science team as the chief science officer at Affectiva. Applying computer vision, machine learning and data science to leverage the largest facial emotion repository as a method of understanding people's feelings and behaviors, el Kaliouby has been awarded with Entrepreneur Magazine's 7 women to watch in 2014, Mass High Tech's Top 20 women to watch in 2014, a place in Wired Magazine's The Wired Smart List in 2013 along with MIT's TR35 in 2012. She has also been featured in articles by the likes of the New York Times, Inc., Tech Crunch and Fast Company.
