Future Album Release

By Piers Fawkes on October 18, 2004

EMI Music UK is releasing the new Robbie Williams Greatest Hits Album plus video content on a Memory Card. The stamp size card slots straight into a mobile phone to deliver music on the move. The launch will be sold through the UK mobile retailer Carphone Warehouse under their brand ‘playmobile’. They predict that the sound quality will be comparable to that of a CD.

This is probably the first sign in a trend for albums where alongside the CD release there will also be formats specifically for use in mobile phones and PDAs. Not only will it have versions of all the songs, but it will also have video content as well.

Gizmodo does give a warning that access to the technology willnot be universal: “It’s unlikely that every platform that has an SD/MMC card slot will be able to use the DRM player, these [formats] will probably be of very limited use. Getting extended content features is nice, but not if you can only use it on a handful of devices.”
