What will happen to the mobile network carriers when we don’t need their networks? Who cares! Nokia have announced the launch of their UMA network solution that allows – we reckon – their phones to operate on WiFi and WiLan networks. Gizmag says:
UMA technology enables the use of broadband and unlicensed access technologies, such as WLAN (WiFi) to offer and expand mobility to users of voice and data services.
The first Nokia phone to use this service will be the Nokia 6136.

Unfortunaltely, Nokia has one customer and one customer only. That customer is the mobile carrier industry. Nokia is, as it were, their bitch. Always will be.
Nokia has had Wi-Fi phones in their labs for years. At the end of the day they still must kiss the carriers ring and do their bidding.
When Vodo asks Nokia for a little red button on the keypad to take customers to Vodo’s little red walled garden Nokia must agree. When carriers ask for clamshells, Nokia must agree. Nokia labs be damned.
I’ve always felt Nokia is cursed for being brilliant but trapped.

I disagree. Just look at traditional homephones. There the VoIP works aswell. Homeusers have it, big companies have it. Cellphones is just the same. And as soon as there’s a way to get cheaper rates, customers will follow that. And there will be services popping up just delivering what the customers want. No big deal. There will be some new media company, be it Yahoo or Google or Ebay picking that up. I mean how expensive were UMTS Licenses again and how much does it cost to set up a WLAN or WIMAX net?
Plus it will be harder to explain for traditional mobile service providers why their services are so expensive (just look at what SMS regular rates are, or daytime phonerates) while you can have a next-to-nothing flatrate using WiFi.
Could be that WiFi phones will work out in big cities only. But hey- then you have a WiFi phone that drops back to GMS or UMTS as soon as there’s no WiFi available anymore.

Mark my words. Not a single mobile carrier will allow any Nokia phone that they provision to have direct, unemcumbered (out of garden) access to a WiFi hotspot. NEVER. EVER. NEVER EVER. NEVERNEVER EVEREVER. Am I getting through here?
No carrier on God’s green earth will do anything that threatens their (slowly deflating) voice tariffs. WiFi (unmediated by the carrier) is about as direct as I can imagine. Short of blowing up radio towers. Boom. Yikes!
In any head to head confrontation between handset vendor and carrier the vendor ALWAYS blinks and backs down.
If you don’t understand this dynamic you don’t understand the mobile wireless industry.

Still I think it will be possible for nowadays non-carriers to hit the WiFi Phone Market. I mean the same arguments could have been brought up before Apple conquered the Mobile Media Player and the MP3 Sales Market with a snap. That’s some sort of dynamic, eh?
And how come that VoIP is succesful on the hometelephone market while there are still carriers offering the same voice services over traditional telephone connections? I mean even with Skype you can call to domestic real telephone numbers.
Instant Messengers also made their way to the cellphones even though or more likely because SMS Services by the big providers are such a rip-off. Why pay 20 Cents for a single SMS when you can send email or IM for a fraction of the SMS price?
Of course the big carriers Vodafone, T-Mobile and what they’re all called will try to protect their high-price models but for how long will they be able to keep that up when within the next 2-5 years Apple, Google, or Yahoo or maybe even a consortium will start a WiFI Phone Service? Wasn’t it the same way with the Music Majors which tried their protectism of traditional music distribution and pricing? How you’d like that dynamic in the mobile market?

don’t think it want happen. I been around the block more than once.. 68 now.. My city, corpus christi tx. is installing wifi cloud that covers 147 sq.miles. and has invited company’s to move in and do there expermitation projects in our local..
