Lunar-Resonant Streetlights

Lunar-Resonant Streetlights

By Piers Fawkes on August 9, 2007

The Civil Twilight Design Collective has designed lunar-resonant streetlights which sense and respond to ambient moonlight to save energy.

Utilizing available moonlight, rather than overwhelming it, saves energy and mitigates light pollution, while facilitating the urban experience of one of the most fundamental and beautiful cycles of nature.

Dimming and brightening with the phases of the moon, the streetlights could save as much as 80-90% of the energy used in streetlighting. The project won Metropolis Mag’s Next Generation Design Competition.
