An interesting article from Japan Market News explores the country’s love for blogging - mobile blogging in particular. According to the Technorati 2007 “State of the Blogsphere” report, Japanese is the #1 blogging language in the world, accounting for 37% of all blog posts, narrowly edging out English at 36%.
The article highlights Japan’s tendency to write about more playful topics such as gossip entertainment and food, whereas Western blogs tend to focus more on discussions and debates. The post then suggests a correlation between mobile phones and Japan’s high level of frivolous posts.
According to a recent survey, the mobile phone was found to be the blogging device of choice, being used by over two-thirds of bloggers in Japan. In fact, over a third of the sample stated that they only blog by mobile phone, while another 20% used both mobile phone and PC, while favoring the phone. The levels for favoring using a PC for blogging were lower.
This naturally leads to the question, what exactly is being written by these mobile bloggers? Well according to the aforementioned survey, nearly 70% of content involves diary entries/columns, followed by movies/television/music at 31%.

The preference for mobile blogging fits to the japanese way of life. The Japanese watch mobile TV (http://www.mobile-tech-today.com/story.xhtml?story_id=56350), read mobile books, play mobile games and so it’s not surprising that they also prefer mobile blogging while sitting or standing in the crowded subways on their way to school or work. Or maybe even more in the afternoons or evenings on their way back.

This preference has also led to extensive use of QR code tagging, and integration of mobile and web technologies. Soon they will have mobile resumes connected to WAP careersites as well as the ability to submit to the general applicant tracking systems.
