john_deere.jpgPay attention Midwest America and Williamsburg Brooklyn, iconic farm machinery manufacturer John Deere is looking to plow through Levi’s and Diesel with a new denim line. The core product will be jeans that are designed with durability and comfort for people who work the land.

“In the past we treated merchandise as more of a promotional giveaway”, said Molly Reddish, category manager for John Deere brand licensing, Moline, Ill. “Now we look at it as a matter of if we are going to offer specific products, we want to build them. We’re at the point where we can offer differentiated product with the quality that reflects the brand.”

John Deere must have taken note of the success of other brands like Harley-Davidson, Mack Trucks, and Caterpillar who have successfully extended from manufacturing into apparel. The line will be made in America by Block Corp. in Tupelo, Mississippi.

  1. It’s true, SO many of these meat-and-potatoes manufacturing companies are entering the fashion world! In the UK the Birmingham Small Arms Company has just launched a menswear line. Their usual trade is motorcycle manufacture!

I’m actually working on a piece about this for my page http://yourfashionoasis.blogspot.com . Where will it end? I think in the near future clothes will be tough and durable beyond our wildest dreams… like a steak you just can’t chew through :)
