Brazilian shoe brand Melissa has recently released in Milan, Italy, its newest model: Melissa + Zaha Hadid, a collaborative effort between the brand and the famous architect. The design of the sandal captivated Carla Sozzani, 10 Corso Como’s creative mind and a passionate art and design collector. 10 Corso Como, a unique mix of selling spaces grouped around a beautiful courtyard, is one of the most renowned concept stores in Milan. The 13.000 square-foot complex gathers everything from books and clothing to art, design and luxury goods. For the launch of the sandal, the store’s interior was completely remodeled: a giant 13-foot tall mock-up of the sandal was built to occupy the center of the “Melissa Gallery”, which also received wall decoration that resembled Melissa + Zaha Hadid’s design. The launch event happened during Milan’s Design Week and brought together key personalities from the design and fashion fields.
Zaha Hadid, born in Bagdad and now living in London, is the only female architect in the world to win the Pritzker prize, considered to be the top award in the area. Her work ranges from museums (The Guggenheim) to furniture and shoe design, all of them displaying the organic character that is her trademark. She is the most recent of a series of partners that Melissa has teamed up with to create special models for their collections. Previous partnerships included names such as Vivienne Westwood, the Campana brothers and Alexandre Herchcovitch. These partnerships have helped Melissa earn worldwide recognition beyond their products: the once plastic shoemaker has been transformed into a hip style curator.
