Google Voice

google voice.jpgGoogle has launched a new service that hopes to make using your current phones much better. Google Voice offers a personal phone number that rings all of your existing phones when people call; all of your voicemail in one inbox; free voicemail transcripts; low-priced international calling and even a do-not-vcall spam filter. A lot of these services have been around for a while as individual applications but Google seems to have studied them and put the best features into a new service.

Here’s a video about the transcription services:

And this video describes how Google will route a call to a certain number:

The phone system seems to be web driven. Free calls are made by dialing the dashboard and then the system will connect you (for free in the US) by ringing your phone then the phone of the person you are dialing.

  1. Check this out if you want an iphone client: http://www.riverturn.com/iphone/VoiceCentral.php

  2. You realize this is not new at all? Thousands of people have been testing out the service on an invite only list for months, and tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of people have ben using it under the name Grand Central which Google bought last year.

  3. Well Kevin, it is not new however it’s definitely not something old and with the recent developments has valid reason to be reviewed.
Obviously, as stated by Google for months now, this the base of what they purchased from Grand Central with many added features. Google has recently only started to send out invitations under the new Google Voice platform; so there are many new users testing out the Google Voice version, as well as the Grand Central users. Having been a user of both, what Google has done is ten times better than Grand Central and its developments deserves to be noticed. Don’t be such a curmudgeon.

  4. Sorry, meant to direct that at “Grand Central” not “Kevin”
