Underground Restaurants Emerging In Washington DC

By Naresh Kumar on March 22, 2010

Washington DC is experiencing the emergence of a variety of underground restaurants. While some of these restaurants such as the Hush Supper Club operate from private homes, there are others like Orange Arrow which are traveling affairs that host dinners in various venues like museums or alleyways. Though only a handful of carefully screened individuals are invited to such events, their demand is growing, so much so that most groups have long waiting lists.

The hosts of these underground restaurants are either amateur cooks who want to showcase their cuisine and culture or former restaurateurs who want to set their own standards. Usually without business and liquor licenses, they accept donations for the food and drinks to get around the license requirements.
