Last week, PSFK published thoughts by InterContinental Hotels Group’s CIO Tom Conophy, who predicted mobile devices doubling as hotel room keys in the future. Turns out that the future is nearer than what he thought! USA Today reports that IHG is testing a new technology next month at two of its Holiday Inn hotels that lets guests use their smartphones to unlock their hotel-room doors. The technology is in the form of an app created by Open Ways, which the guests will need to download. The app will work with most smartphones including the iPhone, Blackberry and Android phone.
