Boston Globe Introduces Mobile SCVNGR Hunt Through City
Capitalizing on location-sharing and mobile technologies, the Boston Globe has introduced an interactive scavenger hunt that challenges users on a trek through Boston. To develop the game, the newspaper teamed up with SCVNGR, a mobile scavenger hunt application that allows users to check-in to venues and complete activities.
The Trek takes players all throughout the city, from Universities to historic landmarks, even making a stop in the local pub. In addition to incorporating a range of topics and Bostonian trivia, the challenges require players to take pictures, scan QR codes and check in at different locations. For example, players can locate Boston Globe news boxes around town and scan specific QR codes to earn extra points and a special standing with a newspaper badge.
The SCVNGR technology used in the Trek is one of the newer location-based apps available for the iPhone and Android. Funded by Google Ventures and Highland Capaital Partners, SCVNGR creates an interactive game based on visiting and interacting with various venues. By encouraging custom-built challenges, SCVNGR provides a powerful mobile gaming platform for both individuals and corporations to interact with a growing mobile community.
