Bill Gates: The Internet Will Replace Universities
At the recent Techonomy conference held in California, Bill Gates predicted that very soon, the best education would come from the Internet and not universities, explaining that the long existing tradition of people going to these educational institutions may soon fade away.
TechCrunch quotes him saying:
Five years from now on the web for free you’ll be able to find the best lectures in the world. It will be better than any single university.
Gates believed that colleges should be less “place-based” and irrespective of the source of one’s knowledge base, credit should be documented.
Whether it’s an MIT degree or if you got everything you know from lectures on the web, there needs to be a way to highlight that.
Gates added though that educational institutions are still essential for younger children but the system needs to be regularized with the help of technology.
