The benefits of a reusable water bottle over packaged water are pretty obvious. Packaged water wastes a lot of energy and creates more trash. But typical reusable water bottles do have a downside, properly cleaning them can be a chore. So it is not surprising that people are starting to look at new design ideas to try and solve the cleaning problem.

The Clean Bottle aims to make cleaning the gunk off the bottom of the bottle easier by having a screw-off, leak-proof cap at both ends. The removable bottom not only makes cleaning easier but also allows the bottle to easily dry out. They are made from non-toxic, BPA-free plastics. The bottle is aimed at cyclists but would probably be useful anywhere. The makers of the Clean Bottle donate 10% of all profits to eco and cycling friendly charities selected by customers.
FastCompanyDesign spotted a new metal bottle called the Alex. This modular bottle unscrews in the middle for easy cleaning. The only plastic used is on the outside threads which along with an o-ring, create a tight seal. The Alex will be available in 32oz and 20oz sizes and the bottoms can be mixed to create an additional 28oz size.
