Affectiva: Creating Emotion Measuring Applications

By Naresh Kumar on February 2, 2011

Affectiva is a startup that grew out of research at the MIT Media Lab and designs commercial technologies that measure and communicate emotions. Through its tools, the Q Sensor and the Affdex that gauge a subject’s emotional state through skin responses as well as via facial expression recognition, the company offers valuable data for clinical research, product testing and customer interaction.

Q Sensor

The Affectiva Q Sensor is a wearable, wireless biosensor that measures emotional arousal via skin conductance, a form of electrodermal activity that grows higher during states such as excitement, attention or anxiety and lower during states such as boredom or relaxation.

Affdex

Affectiva’s facial expression recognition technology or Affdex for short, provides opt-in, video-based, facial expression recognition. The technology identifies whether a customer is smiling, looking interested or distracted and looking at or away from a screen.
